Fire Ants in Central Arkansas
Fire ants are named for the intense pain their stings can inflict, often described as a burning sensation. These ants are particularly aggressive when their home is disturbed, swarming out to attack any perceived threat en masse. They are not only a nuisance due to their painful stings but also pose a risk to infrastructure by damaging electrical equipment and wiring, attracted to electromagnetic fields.
Fire Ant Habitat
These ants are drawn to moist conditions and are commonly found near water sources such as rivers, well-irrigated gardens, and potted plants. Their mounds, a marvel of natural engineering, help maintain suitable temperature and humidity levels, making them critical to the colony’s survival. Unbothered, these mounds are often found in sunny spots where they can continue to thrive undisturbed.
Fire Ant Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
The sting of a fire ant is not just painful but can also lead to allergic reactions in humans and animals. The initial sting can cause a fiery pain, followed by the formation of itchy lesions that can turn into blisters filled with yellowish fluid within a day. Their ability to damage landscaping and even mechanical and electrical systems makes them a formidable pest.
Due to the serious threat posed to people and their pets, if a mound is located, it is best to leave it alone and contact a professional ant exterminator.
