Little Brown Bats in Central Arkansas
Little brown bats live approximately six and a half years, though some may live longer under optimal conditions. They are nocturnal, spending their days in dark, secluded places like hollow trees or the eaves of buildings, and emerging at dusk to feed.
Little Brown Bat Habitat
These bats are not territorial, often living in large colonies that can number into the thousands. They migrate seasonally, traveling hundreds of miles between their summer habitats and their winter hibernacula in special roosts where they hibernate during the colder months.
Little Brown Bat Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
Employing echolocation (a biological sonar system) to navigate and hunt, little brown bats capture and consume a variety of insects, which can include harmful pests. Each night, they can eat up to half of their body weight in insects. While beneficial for pest control, their presence in urban areas can be problematic. Little brown bats can transmit diseases, including rabies, and their droppings can lead to health hazards. These bats are generally not aggressive but will defend themselves if handled, posing a bite risk.
