Clover Mites in Central Arkansas
Clover mites are viewed as a nuisance pest, invading structures by the thousands, primarily in the spring and autumn. Clover mites are found worldwide, including the United States. This mite used to be considered an occasional invader but is now much more serious in homes and on properties for several reasons. First, with suburban sprawl and housing booms, the mite infestations rapidly expanded. Second, well-fertilized lawns that grow close to the foundations of houses are also a reason for the dramatic increase in clover mites.
Clover Mite Habitat
Clover mites will look like dark red specks crawling around windows, doors, siding, curtains, drapes, and furniture. Clover mites overwinter chiefly in the egg stage, under bark, in cracks in fence posts, under sheathing of buildings, in cracks in the foundation, or dry, protected sites. In the early spring, the winter eggs will hatch and an entire generation will complete its lifespan during spring and early summer. Clover mites enjoy the sun and will locate sunny southern and eastern exposed homes. When clover mites have infested a building, they can be a major frustration for homeowners.
Clover Mite Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
Clover mites are pests not because they bite or cause disease, but simply because they can invade a structure in unbelievable numbers. In 1954, one single bedroom was estimated to have 250,000 mites crawling on the floor! Clover mites will leave a red stain of their natural color behind if they are crushed. Due to their small size, an infestation may go unnoticed until it has gotten out of control. However, what most people are likely to notice are the red stains clover mites leave behind.
