Sowbugs in Central Arkansas

Found throughout the United States, sowbugs and pillbugs are frequently confused due to their similar appearance, leading to the interchangeable use of their names. Frequently known as roly-polies, pillbugs exhibit the unique ability to roll into a ball when disturbed, a trait absent in sowbugs. Sowbugs possess tail-like appendages protruding from their rear, preventing them from rolling up for protection. They are easily identifiable by their segmented, hard, back plates. Since sowbugs rely on moisture, they typically do not survive indoors for more than a few days unless extremely damp conditions are present.

Sowbug Habitat

Sowbugs thrive in moist environments, frequently occupying outdoor spaces beneath mulch, fallen leaves, and rocks. These nocturnal creatures rely on humid conditions during the day to thrive. Serving as scavengers, sowbugs predominantly consume organic matter but may venture beyond their habitats at night, wandering over sidewalks, patios, and building foundations. They may also consume various forms of organic debris, such as dead insects, animal feces, and decaying plant roots.Their tendency to invade crawl spaces, damp basements, and ground-level structures can make them a nuisance.

Sowbug Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Sowbugs are non-aggressive insects that do not bite or sting, and they do not pose a risk to household items. Some individuals may experience minor skin irritation if they come into contact with their secretions. While primarily regarded as a nuisance, particularly when they invade indoor environments, they do not harm people but can cause damage to plant roots through their feeding activities. Usually entering buildings through door thresholds, especially in homes with ground-level sliding glass doors, the sighting of sowbugs indoors is often a sign that there is a significant outdoor population.
