Ground Beetles in Central Arkansas

Ground beetles are one of the largest groups of beetles in North America, with over 2,600 species. Typically shiny, black or brown, and sometimes iridescent, these beetles are often confused with cockroaches because of their similar appearance. However, ground beetles are harmless, while cockroaches can cause more significant issues. Although ground beetles are primarily outdoor insects, they sometimes become accidental pests by wandering into homes and buildings.

Ground Beetle Habitat

Ground beetles are commonly found outdoors under various objects such as wood, logs, rocks, and other debris. During the summer, ground beetles can appear in large numbers in many parts of the country. They are nocturnal feeders and are often attracted to porch lights and other exterior lighting. Ground beetles can become a nuisance when they enter homes and buildings through small cracks, openings, or open doors and windows. Once inside, they seek out hidden, damp areas such as basements or under boxes and other items on the floor.

Ground Beetle Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Ground beetles do not cause damage to household structures or furniture and are harmless to people and pets. When exposed, they quickly seek shelter but rarely fly. Outdoors, and ground beetles are beneficial as they feed on insect larvae. However, during the summer, infestations inside homes or commercial buildings can be overwhelming. While some species can release odorous secretions when threatened, ground beetles do not bite or attack humans.
