Field Cockroaches in Central Arkansas

The field cockroach, or vaga cockroach, is a small cockroach in the United States that was likely introduced from southwest Asia. This cockroach is now a common insect found from the West Coast to Texas. Field cockroaches are often found in irrigation regions of southern Arizona and Southern California. They are similar in appearance to the German cockroach but are unique with their blackish-brown marking on their face. This marking can be found between its eyes down to its mouth. Females can live for over 200 days, and during this time can produce 6 generations a year (roughly 200 to 300 offspring).

Field Cockroach Habitat

Field cockroaches feed largely on decomposing vegetation, including fruits, such as dates. Another distinction from the German cockroach is that field cockroaches rarely enter buildings and prefer to live outside in plant debris and leaf litter. During the dryer months, field cockroaches will search for moisture, causing them to possibly look in structures. Due to the close resemblance to German cockroaches, homeowners will commonly mistake field cockroaches for German cockroaches.

Field Cockroach Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Field cockroaches are primarily an outdoor cockroach species, and when found indoors, they may be treated as an occasional invader that will not take up residence indoors. Common places to find a field roach include crevices, corners, and cracks in homes. While not as prevalent as other roach species, field cockroaches have similar concerns. Most pressing is the potential to spread bacteria if they gain access to pantries and kitchens. Populations of these fast-breeding cockroaches can increase rapidly if left unchecked.

For that reason, always contact your local cockroach exterminators for help.
