Smokybrown Cockroaches in Central Arkansas

The smokybrown cockroach is a tropical urban pest in many parts of the United States and is common in Texas, the Gulf Coast, throughout Florida, and in some areas of California. Commonly found outside, this species is attracted to decorative planters boxes and plantings, garages, water meter boxes, and wood piles. They have also been noted to inhabit municipal sewers. On occasion, this species has been found in homes, which is accompanied by their spread of bacteria. Should they find their way into a home, they are typically found in kitchens, bathrooms, and attics. The adults can fly and are more likely to do so on warm humid evenings.

Smokybrown Cockroach Habitat

Smokybrown cockroaches need moisture to survive, and outdoors they are found in woodpiles, leaf litter, tree bark, and mulch. If the roaches happen to be found indoors, they gravitate towards the upper parts of the buildings and will live under siding or shingles on the house. Smoky Brown roaches are sometimes found in attics, bathrooms, kitchens, and near points of entry such as garage and crawl space doors. During the summer months, they can be found in shrubs, trees, or other vegetation around the premises.

Smokybrown Cockroach Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Though their preferred habitat is outdoors, smokybrown cockroaches can still cause problems for homeowners, especially in humid environments. They live in a variety of places that are usually in decomposition such as dead leave piles, sewers, and storm drains, and are known to consume bird droppings. With this in mind, their presence in your home introduces dangerous bacteria to your cooking and eating surfaces. As cockroaches need moisture to survive, home infestations occur in moist, organic-rich structures. When cockroaches are found dead in the home, it is likely due to dehydration in a dry indoor environment.

If you suspect a smokybrown cockroach infestation, it is recommended to contact a professional cockroach exterminator.
