Fleas in Central Arkansas

Fleas are small, wingless blood-sucking parasites that live on the exterior of their host. Adult fleas must feed on the blood or warm-blooded hosts to survive and reproduce. Of all ectoparasites found on dogs and cats, fleas are the most common. Fleas are a pest to both animals and people as they are difficult to eliminate and will bite either host. Their numbers will increase dramatically during spring and early summer.

Flea Habitat

Fleas prefer humid, moist, and shady areas, but will thrive in many climates. The area under a deck or porch can turn into a space for fleas in the winter. Areas with leaf litter, weeds, tall grass, gravelly areas, wood piles, and sandy patches are all spaces that attract fleas. Even the smallest spaces like a crack in concrete can house fleas, but they prefer leaves, trees, and shrubs. Sunny areas or open grass will deter fleas. Fleas will often enter a home being attached to a pet and they can quickly make the structure its new home. Flea larvae do not like the light so carpets, bedding, pet beds, and upholstered furniture make cozy homes for fleas, flea eggs, and flea larvae.

Flea Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Fleas will feed mostly on non-human animals but will infect and bite humans. A bite from a flea looks like a small red dot and occurs in clusters of two or three around legs, ankles, and feet. While there may be an allergic reaction, this reaction will not typically have a serious impact on a person’s health. Some people and pets suffer from flea bite allergic dermatitis, characterized by intense itching, hair loss, reddening of the skin, and secondary infection. One flea bite can initiate an allergic reaction, and itching can persist for up to five days after the bite.
