Huntsman Spiders in Central Arkansas
Among the world’s largest spider species, the huntsman spider is often referred to as the giant crab spider or the banana spider. Despite occasional confusion with the brown recluse, it lacks venom and shares no relation to the recluse species. They are also commonly mistaken for tarantulas due to their large size. Unlike conventional spiders, huntsman spiders rely on speed rather than web-spinning to capture prey, often venturing into homes in pursuit of prey.
Huntsman Spider Habitat
Huntsman spiders can move swiftly and favor dark areas during daylight. They will resurface under the cover of night to pursue prey. They frequently seek shelter beneath tree bark, within woodpiles, buildings, and occasionally even vehicles. The flattened physique of huntsman spiders allows them to fit through narrow openings, which enables them to infiltrate buildings, barns, sheds, and other secluded spaces. Sensitivity to cold prohibits their survival in regions with freezing temperatures, prompting migration indoors during winter. In colder conditions, they often seek refuge indoors, beneath furniture or cabinets, behind wall decorations, and within closets and garages.
Huntsman Spider Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
Although Huntsman spiders lack sufficient venom to warrant hospitalization, their bites can induce significant pain and potentially trigger adverse reactions in sensitive people. Despite their size, these arachnids are typically not aggressive, with most preferring to flee rather than bite when confronted. Recognized for their beneficial role, Huntsman spiders contribute to pest control by preying on a diverse array of insects, including cockroaches, moths, and occasionally small reptiles.
