Orb-Weavers Spiders in Central Arkansas
Orb-weavers are the epitome of spiders, with their iconic circular webs that are commonly sighted in gardens, fields, and forests. They are found globally, except for the Arctic and Antarctica. Orb-weaver spiders are characterized by their considerable size and striking colors. These arachnids weave elaborate webs in concentric arrangements within garden environments, patiently awaiting the arrival of prey ensnared in their traps. Due to their limited eyesight, orb weavers heavily rely on vibrations in their webs to detect and distinguish potential meals.
Orb-Weaver Spider Habitat
Like all spiders, orb-weavers are carnivores, feeding primarily on insects and other small organisms that get trapped in their sticky webs. They are most abundant in the summer, in garden areas, and around the home. Orb-weavers create expansive circular webs that can reach widths of six feet or more, often spanning the gaps between buildings and shrubbery. Homeowners may remain oblivious to their presence until venturing outdoors after nightfall, when illuminated webs become apparent, or inadvertently encountering them in darkness. Typically, these spiders utilize the upper support of an eave while fastening the bottom frame lines to nearby shrubs or the ground.
Orb-Weaver Spider Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
Orb-weavers have the ability to bite, yet such instances are rare, and their venom poses no threat to humans. Typically harmless, orb-weavers may become bothersome when constructing their expansive webs in inconvenient locations for humans. Periodically, they may enter homes and establish webs in doorways or window ledges. Despite their imposing size, orb-weaver spiders are docile creatures and do not pose a significant risk to humans. However, caution should be exercised to avoid inadvertently walking into their large, adhesive webs during the night, as the sensation of these spiders crawling across one’s face can induce terror and provoke anxiety in certain individuals.
