Tarantulas in Central Arkansas

Tarantula spiders, distinguished by their large size and hairy bodies, are frequently encountered in Central Arkansas, instilling fear with their imposing presence. Although venomous tarantulas inhabit tropical regions, those found in the U.S. are unlikely to inflict serious harm with their venom, which generally exhibits low toxicity to humans. Tarantula activity peaks during mating season, occurring predominantly in September and October.

Tarantula Spider Habitat

Tarantulas are drawn to warm, dry climates, where they seek refuge in underground burrows during the day and venture out at night to hunt insects. Inhabiting arid landscapes with well-drained soils, these nocturnal creatures are often overlooked by homeowners except during mating season, when males emerge during daylight hours to mate. While tarantulas generally avoid entering homes, they may enter structures during mating season if accessible.

Tarantula Spider Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

When threatened, a tarantula resorts to defensive measures by exposing its fangs and shifting its weight onto its hind legs. If this fails to deter a threat, the spider may use its legs to release urticating hairs towards the aggressor. These minute, barbed hairs induce mild irritation in humans but have the potential to prove fatal to small animals such as frogs or rodents. Tarantulas are considered non-lethal and seldom resort to biting except in cases of self-defense. When a tarantula does bite, it’s typically a response to handling or provocation, resulting in a bite comparable in severity to that of a bee sting. Individuals with heightened sensitivity may experience an allergic reaction and should promptly seek medical attention.
