Opossums in Central Arkansas
While there are over 100 species of opossums globally, the Virginia opossum is the only species found within the United States. Approximately the size of a large house cat, opossums are regarded as beneficial mammals due to their diet, which includes insects and snakes, leading many property owners to view them favorably. Opossums are nomadic creatures, rarely lingering in one location for an extended period, often occupying abandoned burrows or crawl spaces. Occasionally, they may pose a nuisance to homeowners while searching for food and shelter.
Opossum Habitat
Dens and burrows are not a common habitat choice for Opossums, who typically seek out abandoned ones rather than dig their own. They are found in a variety of habitats, including forests, grasslands, urban areas, and even swamps. Opossums exhibit a preference for tree dwellings, seeking refuge in them for added protection. However, if provided access, they may venture into attics, walls, and crawl spaces of homes. Detecting an unusual and unpleasant odor within your home could signal the presence of a possum residing in your walls.
Opossum Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers
Opossums pose no major threat to humans or pets. Their teeth are not meant for attacking or even preying on animals; their teeth are good for chewing and holding. They do not attack humans and instead will play “dead” when danger is perceived. Opossums don’t dig holes, destroy gardens, bite, sting, or stay in one place for very long. However, opossums can carry various parasites and diseases. They are not the cleanest of animals and carry a strong odor if they access attics and crawl spaces in homes. If opossums are an issue, it’s best to have them removed humanely by a professional wildlife control company.
