Raccoons in Central Arkansas

Raccoons, recognized by their stocky physique and characteristic black facial “mask,” inhabit a vast range encompassing much of the United States and reaching into northern South America. While nomadic, they maintain defined territories, opting to mark locations instead of engaging in digging or nest-building behaviors. Despite their year-round activity, raccoons seek refuge in dens during harsh winter conditions. Homeowners often find themselves at odds with raccoons, notorious for their disruptive antics such as scavenging through trash cans and causing disturbances in backyard areas.

Raccoon Habitat

Raccoons have a preference for wooded areas near water sources and natural habitats, where they seek refuge in abandoned burrows or nestled within the curves of trees. In urban environments, raccoons adapt by taking up residence in vacant crawl spaces, beneath porches, or within attics. Raccoons actively explore their habitats, scavenging for food and venturing into new territories. Their omnivorous diet includes insects, fruits, vegetables, and small animals when necessary. Raccoons are notorious for their late-night foraging expeditions, especially raiding garbage bins. Gardens and residential properties attract raccoons due to the availability of food and potential shelter opportunities.

Raccoon Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Although not all raccoons carry rabies, raccoons as a whole are recognized as significant carriers of rabies in the U.S., particularly prevalent in the eastern regions where their populations are expanding. It is essential to ensure that pets are adequately vaccinated to minimize the risk of exposure. Raccoons are known to prey on poultry, destroy bird nests, and cause damage to gardens or crops. Their efforts to establish dens can result in extensive damage to a home’s insulation, wood, shingles, electrical wiring, and walls. Indications of raccoon activity may include the presence of droppings, urine stains, or materials accumulated from nest-building activities. If you are having an issue with raccoons, it is best to consult a professional wildlife control company for removal.
