Skunks in Central Arkansas

Skunks are small mammals that are widely known for their distinctive black coats, white stripes, and fluffy tails. Their most notable attribute is their ability to discharge a strong-scented spray from their anal glands when under threat, acting as a formidable defense mechanism. Omnivorous by nature, skunks have diverse diets, including insects, small mammals, fruits, and vegetation. Despite having relatively poor eyesight, they rely on their excellent sense of smell and hearing to navigate their surroundings. Skunks are solitary animals except during the mating season or when raising their young.

Skunk Habitat

Skunks are known to adapt to human-modified environments and can be found in cities, towns, and suburban neighborhoods. They may seek shelter under buildings or in other man-made structures. Skunks are nocturnal creatures, meaning they are most active during the night. Skunks thrive in habitats that offer a mix of wooded areas for protection and open spaces for scavenging. They are capable of digging, although they are not as proficient at excavation as some other animals such as moles or badgers. Their adaptability is evident in their choice of dens, ranging from natural burrows and hollow logs to man-made structures like sheds and crawl spaces.

Skunk Behaviors, Threats, or Dangers

Skunks are known carriers of diseases such as rabies and leptospirosis, posing a risk of spreading these infections to humans or pets through scratches, bites, or contact with their saliva. Additionally, they have the capability of releasing a potent-smelling liquid from their anal glands as a defensive mechanism when they feel threatened. The strong odor emitted by this spray can result in discomfort, irritation, and temporary blindness if it makes contact with the eyes. Confronting a skunk is a scenario best avoided. If you are having an issue with skunks,  it is best to consult a professional wildlife control company for removal.
